To assess households surrounding Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP) and establish key knowledge and information needs from the routine historical data collected, a more consultative user needs assessment was carried out to identify communities that would provide valuable high-quality and timely data on households’ knowledge and understanding of One Health to support increased uptake of practical actions that community members will take to improve their health and well-being, reducing threats to gorillas, other wildlife and their habitats.

A representative sample of 80 households, from 8 parishes was identified and selected, as a subset of the population to accurately reflect the characteristics of the general larger communities surrounding BINP. The Village Health and Conservation Teams (VHCT) coordinators obtained comprehensive baseline information from the households on their knowledge about zoonotic disease transmission between livestock, humans, and gorillas, to help develop Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials.

Next Steps:

  • Finalize the assessment of selected representative households surrounding BINP to establish key knowledge and information needs through routine data collection

  • Identify and select service providers, develop and sign terms of agreement to guide the flipcharts development and other IEC materials

  • Print the IEC Materials

  • Distribute the flip charts among the VHCTs and other IEC materials in key places
