COASTAL COMMUNITIES THROUGH CLIMATE RESILIENCE: A TOURISM-LED APPROACH | RESILIENT DESTINATIONS FOUNDATION

COASTAL KOCHI, KERALA INDIA

2026 BALLOT FINALIST | NOMINATED BY ENCOUNTERS ASIA

This project establishes community-led ecological monitoring, creates a community-managed fish sanctuary, and restores mangrove habitat in Coastal Kochi, India. By repurposing tourism as a driver of conservation, it strengthens climate resilience, protects biodiversity, and creates new tourism experiences that support local livelihoods and long-term ecosystem stewardship.

 The Issue:

Coastal Kochi's estuarine ecosystems are being degraded by climate change, unregulated development, pollution, habitat loss, and declining community stewardship, resulting in reduced fish biodiversity, mangrove loss, and weaker natural protection against flooding and erosion. The application identifies the root cause as fragmented systems, where tourism, conservation, local governance, and community knowledge operate independently rather than working together. The project addresses this by integrating community-led conservation, ecological monitoring, tourism, and local governance through its Climate-Resilient and Climate-Responsible Destination (CRCRD) framework. It establishes community monitoring systems, creates a fish sanctuary, pilots mangrove bio-fencing, and repurposes tourism networks to support long-term ecosystem restoration and community resilience.

What are Measurable Outcomes Expected from the Funding of this Project?

  • 25 community members trained in biodiversity monitoring, climate resilience, and first-response practices.

  • 8–10 coastal villages implement community monitoring systems for salinity, temperature, and water-level changes.

  • One community-led fish sanctuary established to protect and regenerate local fish biodiversity.

What Would a Successful Project Result In?

A community-managed fish sanctuary and restored mangrove habitat improve coastal biodiversity and climate resilience, while trained local residents lead ecological monitoring and new tourism experiences that generate sustainable income and support long-term stewardship of Coastal Kochi's estuarine ecosystems.
