Standing Firm in the Face of Conservation Rollbacks
Dear Members, Partners, and the Adventure Travel Community,
We believe in the power of travel to protect and conserve. That belief has never wavered—even in the face of shifting policies and funding cuts that threaten the landscapes, wildlife, and communities we hold dear.
Recent decisions by the U.S. Administration, including the rollback of critical environmental protections and the loss of USAID funding for global conservation efforts, create an undeniable challenge. These actions do not reflect the values of the global adventure travel community—our community. We stand for a different future. One where all travelers and businesses recognize their role as stewards of the planet. Where conservation isn’t seen as an obstacle to progress but as the very foundation of a thriving world.
Hope Through Collective Action - While we cannot single-handedly replace the funding and programs being cut, we can step up in meaningful ways. This is our opportunity to lean into what we do best—taking action together, strengthening global partnerships, and mobilizing the travel industry to drive real impact.
Here’s what we’re focusing on in 2025:
Empowering Indigenous & Grassroots Conservation – Prioritizing funding for conservation efforts led by local and Indigenous communities, particularly in places where international support has been withdrawn. These communities have long been the best protectors of their lands, and with our help, they can continue their work.
Strengthening Our Support for Past & Present Grantees – Ensuring that organizations we have funded in the past are not left vulnerable to funding shortfalls. We are committed to providing continued resources, convening experts, and amplifying their voices.
Engaging & Mobilizing Travelers – Adventure travelers are among the most passionate advocates for conservation. They have seen firsthand what is at stake, and they want to help. We are creating more ways for individual travelers to engage, support projects, and take action.
We know our members are not bystanders. You have built businesses and careers around the values we share—Planet first. People centered. Impact driven. Partner powered. Now is the time to harness that collective energy.
Despite the challenges ahead, there is so much good we can do. Empathy, kindness, and philanthropy have always been at the heart of the adventure travel community. If we come together to connect, collaborate, and take action, we are a force.
Join us. Support us. Stand with us.
With gratitude and determination,
Soraya Shattuck
