Meet ATCF Member Another World Adventures
Another World Adventures is one of the founding partners of Free Range Ocean, a Registered UK not-for-profit organization founded in 2023 with the purpose of using adventure sailing, citizen science, and storytelling to inspire action for a healthy ocean among boating and coastal communities.

Meet new ATCF member Larissa Clark, Director of Another World Adventures who has recently co-founded an amazing new directory connecting sailors to scientific projects that need data or research. She also nominated Women in Science, one of the ATCF grant winners for 2025.
Tell me a little bit about "Another World Adventures
Another World Adventures is the ‘go-to’ travel advisory for intrepid adventure seekers looking for inspiring extraordinary adventures and to connect with the folk that run them. I co-founded it in 2012 after a transformational transatlantic sailing voyage where I joined the voyage crew of a tall ship on a passage from Spain to Brazil. It had taken months to figure out how I - a non-sailor - could cross an ocean without flying, something I was motivated to do after six years working in PR for an environmental justice charity. After a month at sea I had a new set of skills and a completely new respect for the ocean and I wanted to share the opportunity and other similar exciting and unusual travel experiences with others.
Another World Adventures is unique because we work across land and sea. We’ve helped thousands of adventurers achieve quite incredible things, from horse riding across the Andes, to expedition team-firsts on source to sea missions. We’re best known for sailing adventures and increasingly for journeys with purpose.
Unlike other adventure agencies we fancy ourselves as an adventure-deli not an adventure-supermarket! We don’t aim to have the ‘most’ trips on the site, only the best ones. We’re small and dedicated to helping people match up with the right operator for the trip, afterall, who you choose to travel with is as important as where you choose to go. We have a fantastic community and most of our travellers are solo adventurers but many are in pairs and groups.
We’re a proud member of the ATCF and I’m a travel advisor for the ATTA, member of the Explorer’s Club, Bluewater Cruising Association and Associate member of the Ocean Cruising Club.

Tell me about the ocean-focused citizen science project/directory (what is it, why did you create it, and who is it geared towards?)
Another World Adventures is one of the founding partners of Free Range Ocean, a Registered UK not-for-profit organization founded in 2023 with the purpose of using adventure sailing, citizen science and storytelling to inspire action for a healthy ocean among boating and coastal communities.
The goal is to inform, inspire and enable others to have their own positive impact on our ocean with an 'everyone, and every action counts' philosophy.
The initiative was recently endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade.
I’m one of the co-founders and I’m so proud of the Free Range Ocean Citizen Science Directory we’ve created. It’s a free resource connecting people with Ocean Citizen Science projects around the world.
We know that scientific knowledge is key to reversing ocean decline, conserving marine life, tackling climate change, and using the ocean sustainably. But as a sailor, I also know how vast the ocean is for researchers to cover without serious help.
With an estimated 30 million recreational boats globally, often in remote places, citizen science offers an incredible opportunity for our community to contribute to vital ocean research. The Free Range Ocean Directory makes it easy to find a project and get involved.
In the Directory, users can search and filter projects by location, topic, skill level, and availability. Projects range from sampling seawater for plankton offshore to beach surveys for invasive species, reporting kelp forest health, or sharing photos of marine life sightings.
There’s something for everyone—from seasoned divers to families enjoying beach outings, adventure holiday makers or tour operators!
We’re only just beginning and would love to forge partnerships with the adventure travel industry to help grow the impact of the Directory.
Free Range Ocean also seeks to host early career marine researchers and conservation storytellers aboard our ocean-going vessel Freeranger as a way to give them an immersive first hand experience of life at sea that can super-charge a career as I well know myself! We’re always looking for bursary partners to support this fellowship programme and to visit projects along our world route! I’d welcome hearing from community members on any chances to collaborate!

Why did you join ATCF?
I’ve been a member and travel advisor with the ATTA for several years and heard about the work of the ATCF and immediately wanted to get involved! The idea of using adventure travel as a force for good really resonates with me in all the projects I’ve worked on over the years and with my passion for getting off the beaten path.
I really believe that travellers have both an opportunity and an obligation to do all they can to be stewards of the planet and I hope that those in the Another World Adventures community and through my work with Free Range Ocean will leave a positive legacy.
How did you learn about Women and Science
Over the past ten years, I’ve been involved in several initiatives to encourage, inspire, and support women in STEM - starting first with a role as Head of Communications for eXXpedition - the all-women sailing voyages investigating ocean plastic pollution. Through that work I met Madeline St Clair who is a powerhouse science communicator and ocean storyteller and champion of all things women and marine science. She co-founded Women in Ocean Science and invited me onto the Advisory Board, to my honour. I’ve since become a trustee to the Women in Ocean Science UK charity which I was proud to nominate for the ATCF grant last year - and they won! It is so well deserved. The Empower Ocean project to deliver ocean literacy, marine conservation and dive training programmes to local women within small-island, coral reef communities is simply world class and I’m thrilled the ATCF community agreed!
Anything else you would like to add?
My own adventure travel experience with my maiden transatlantic voyage inspired more than just the founding of Another World Adventures … it changed my life! I currently live aboard my 50’ sailboat s/v Freeranger with my husband and two kids aged 8 and 6 years old and we run Free Range Ocean and Another World Adventures from on board. We are six months into a multi-year world voyage where we participate in citizen science initiatives along the way! People can follow along on https://www.instagram.com/thefreerangecrew
